This 5-day trip is timed specifically between January and March, when over a half million wildebeest calves are born in high succession. The experience is characterised by the vast herds, tender new life, and the highest concentration of the predator action anywhere in the ecosystem, offering a beautiful and often intense wildlife spectacle.

Day 1&2: Arrival and then vast plains of Ndutu.

The safari begins with your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha, followed by a light aircraft flight (or a long drive) to the Ndutu region, which lies between the southern Serengeti and then Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This specific area is the main calving ground, chosen by the wildebeest for its nutritious short grasses, rich in calcium from the volcanic ash, which is essential for nursing mothers.

Day 2 is dedicated to an intensive full day game drive across the Ndutu plains. Here, the wildebeest from a dense mass, creating a sea of movement. You will witness the calving in action, with thousands of the calves being born daily. This abundance of the vulnerable young attracts the highest numbers of the predators, including the largest cheetah coalitions, vast lion prides, and then numerous hyenas. The game driving is slow and deliberate, focusing on the dramatic interaction between predators and the newborn herds. You will stay at a specialized mobile tented camp or a lodge in the Ndutu area, which is strategically positioned to follow the herds. After the experience you will be transferred to your lodge for dinner, relaxation and overnight stay.

Day 3: Ngorongoro conservation area and Lake Ndutu.

Day 3 continues your exploration of the calving grounds, focusing on the western and southern edges of the Ndutu plains to stretch into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). This day allows you to explore the open country where the herds spread out. Your guide will track the movements of the vast herds, ensuring you are in the heart of the calving action.

In addition to the migration, the NCA offers unique geological sights. You will be searching for the predator activity near the edges of the acacia woodlands and volcanic kopjes (rocky outcrops). The plains are also home to the large numbers of gazelles and zebras, whose young ones are also vulnerable during this peak predation period. The evening will be spent in a lodge in the Ngorongoro Highlands or back in Ndutu area, preparing for the wonderful crater descent the following morning.

Day 4&5: Crater majesty and Departure.

Day 4 is dedicated to the magnificent Ngorongoro crater. After an early descent onto the crater floor, you will experience one of the highest concentrations of the wildlife in the world. While the migration here are outside the crater during this season, the crater maintains its own resident population of the Big five, including the critically endangered Black Rhino. This day offers a fantastic experience to the open plains, providing dense game viewing within the stunning caldera walls. You will enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor before ascending and then heading back toward the Karatu area.

Day 5 marks the end of the safari. After breakfast in Ngorongoro Highlands, you will drive back to Arusha or be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)for your international flight. Alternatively, you may take a short internal flight from the nearest airstrip, concluding your intense and specialized calving safari.
