Detailed itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha and transfer to the highlands.

Your safari adventure begins in Arusha, the gateway city to Tanzania’s northern circuit. After meeting your professional safari guide from African Vacation Safaris and then start on a perfect drive that takes you out of the city and up into the cool, lush highlands surrounding the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This journey is beautiful introduction to the region, offering views of the fertile farmlands and local communities.

The destination of the evening is a comfortable lodge or tented camp that is located in the Karatu region or directly on the crater rim. The drive up the highlands provides spectacular early glimpses of the landscapes. Upon arrival, you will check in, and then have the afternoon free to relax, enjoy the high-altitude views and then prepare for the incredible wildlife viewing ahead. Dinner at the lodge is a highlight, often with lavish, locally sourced ingredients and a briefing from your guide about the adventures the following day.

Day 2: Exploring Ngorongoro crater descent.

On the second day of the safari, wake up early in the morning and enjoy breakfast. After breakfast you will meet your safari guide and descent approximately 600 meters (2000 feet) to the crater floor. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an intact, massive volcanic caldera that is a home to an astonishing and then permanent concentration of the wildlife often called the ‘’Eight Wonder of the World.’’ You will spend a full morning exploring the crater floor, which is renowned for offering the single best chance in Africa to spot the endangered Black Rhino in their natural habitat.

The crater’s diverse habitats, including grasslands, swamps and lakes supports huge populations of lions, heyans, hippos, wildebeests, zebras and huge herds of buffaloes. The game drive is non-stop due to the high density of the animals; you are almost guaranteed to see the variety of the species throughout the morning. A packed picnic lunch is enjoyed near the scenic hippo pool before you ascend the crater wall in the early afternoon heading back to your lodge for relaxation and dinner.

Day 3: Exploring Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

While the crater is the main attraction, the surrounding Ngorongoro Conservation Area offers a unique experience that separate this itinerary from standard safari trips. Day three dedicated to exploring the broader NCA and its special features. You may take a game drive toward Lake Eyasi, a seasonal soda lake, which is an important habitat for the flamingos and other water birds depending on the season.

Alternatively, you can choose to engage in the cultural experience. Ngorongoro Conservation Area is unique because it allows for both conservation and then human habitation, majorly by the Maasai people. An optional activity a Maasai Boma (village) to learn about their traditional pastoralist culture, including their vibrant dancing, unique architecture and ancient customs. Another excellent option is a guided walk in the highlands (if staying outside the main wildlife area) accompanied by an armed ranger, allowing you to appreciate the landscape on foot and then discover smaller biodiversity that often missed from the vehicle. These activities provide crucial and scenic experience to your safari. Later you will enjoy your dinner and overnight stay.
